私も同様のエラーが発生していましたが、何が起こったのかはわかりませんが、最近の更新中に /etc/default/grub ファイルに余分な行が追加されていました。

「/etc/default/grub」34L、1279C

そのファイルの一番下にあったので、コメントアウトしたら、再び動作するようになりました。
