問題の原因が分かりました。Windows マシンに、リポジトリから共有ディレクトリを指すシンボリック リンクがありました。シンボリック リンクを削除したら、うまくいきました。Linux マシンだけでなく、Virtual Box が稼働しているマシンでも、シンボリック リンクの使用は非常に難しいようです。
