数か月前に Ubuntu 11.10 をインストールしましたが、タッチパッドを有効にする適切な方法が見つかりません。

ソフトウェアセンターを開いて、シナプス、インストール後にタッチパッドを有効にするパッケージがいくつかあるはずです。

Dell Inspiron 1545 でも同じ問題が発生しました。
