通常の更新 (Ubuntu 10.10、64 ビット) を実行していましたが、ソフトウェアの更新に失敗しました。ソフトウェア センターで「アイテムをインストールできません...修復しますか?」というエラーが表示されます。修復ボタンを押すと、「パッケージ操作に失敗しました」というエラーが表示されます。
ネットで調べてみると、試してみるべきことがいくつか見つかりました。

openjdk への依存関係が壊れていることはわかりますが、実際に問題を解決するために次に何をすべきかわかりません。マシンに他のソフトウェアをインストールする必要があり、これが妨げになっています。

数日前に何とか解決しましたが、どうやって解決したのかは不明でした。いずれにしても、アップグレード時に今日再び問題が発生しました。答えを示した日本語のサイトを見つけました:
$ which update-alternatives
/usr/bin/update-alternatives
$ sudo which update-alternatives
/usr/local/bin/update-alternatives
$ sudo mv /usr/local/bin/update-alternatives /usr/local/bin/update-alternatives.old
$ sudo apt-get upgrade

つまり、要するに、2 つの異なる更新の選択肢があり、それが「正しい」ものを実行していることを確認するだけでよかったのです。
