Ich könnte ein ähnliches Problem beheben, indem ich den proprietären Treiber von Nvidia installiere. Für Debian-basierte Betriebssysteme:
apt install xserver-xorg-video-nvidia

Nach etwa einem Tag Debugging lief es darauf hinaus, dass der gdmBenutzer nicht über die richtigen Berechtigungen verfügte. In meinem Fall habe ich versucht, VirtualGL zum Laufen zu bringen, also musste ich den gdmBenutzer nur der entsprechenden Benutzergruppe hinzufügen:
sudo adduser gdm vglusers
