Hay preguntas similares, ninguna de las cuales ha resuelto mi problema, así que me disculpo si me perdí algo.
Estaba usando mysqldbcopypara hacer una copia de una base de datos cuando mi instancia se quedó sin espacio libre. MySQL falló y no pudo reiniciarse. Para liberar espacio, eliminé la carpeta con el nuevo nombre de la base de datos /var/lib/mysql. Mysql todavía no se reiniciaba, así que lo eliminé /var/lib/mysqle intenté reinstalarlo con sudo mysql_install_db. Esto funcionó, pero ya no podía iniciar sesión con o sin mi contraseña y no podía restablecerla.
Como último intento, simplemente lo hice
sudo apt-get remove --purge mysql*
pero cuando voy a reinstalar, aparece

Entonces intenté ejecutar mysqlden la terminal y vi
mysqld_safe Directory '/var/run/mysqld' for UNIX socket file don't e$ists.
lo que me llevó a crear ese director (y actualizar los permisos). entonces podría
sudo mkdir -p /var/run/mysqld
sudo chown mysql:mysql /var/run/mysqld
Entonces podría comenzar en modo seguro.
sudo /usr/bin/mysqld_safe --skip-grant-tables &
y establecer la contraseña manualmente
