Creo que el problema aquí es que te pierdes el paquete gcc... así que asegúrate de tener una conexión a Internet y luego haz:

sudo apt-get install gcc

Tenga en cuenta que ya existe una versión de HPLIP en el Centro de software de Ubuntu para Ubuntu 11.10, como puede ver aquí:
