Estaba intentando editar source.list apt-get install update
y generé un nuevo código fuente repogen.simplylinux.ch
y no sé qué sucedió durante la edición, pero ahora, cuando escribo, version
dice:
WARNING:root:could not open file '/etc/apt/sources.list'
version: command not found
y cuando lo hago apt-get install mtools
dice:

Parece que falta el archivo sources.list, según la descripción del tema. Compruebe si realmente falta el archivo...
file /etc/apt/sources.list
Si falta, adjunto una copia del archivo source.list original al final de esta respuesta. (Por cierto, noté que ha iniciado sesión como root. Probablemente sea mejor iniciar sesión como usuario administrador y elevar sus privilegios cuando sea necesario).
En un tipo terminal
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
Corte y pegue el contenido de la lista de fuentes que se muestra al final de esta respuesta. Cierra gedit e ingresa lo siguiente en tu terminal
sudo apt-get update
Con respecto a otros repositorios que haya agregado, abra una nueva pregunta como se sugiere.

funciona para mi
