Creo que probé todas las demás publicaciones sobre "el sonido no funciona", perdí la cuenta.
purgar/reinstalar alsa y pulsar, reiniciar, agregar usuario al grupo de audio, varias líneas en el archivo de configuración de alsa como "opciones snd-hda-intel model=" luego probé diferentes opciones como genérica, automática, básica, predeterminada, etc. pulseaudio -k && sudo alsa force-reload varias veces, con y sin reinicio.

ACTUALIZACIÓN: Ahora agregué una tarjeta de sonido Creative Soundblaster Play 2 USB y desactivé la tarjeta integrada desde el BIOS. En mi escritorio Ubuntu funciona de inmediato, por lo que el hardware funciona con seguridad. En el servidor no hace nada. Todavía sólo una salida ficticia en la configuración de sonido (pulso).
reinstalado/purgado/etc pero fue en vano.
alsamixer ya no se abre, proc/asound no existe
