Intento instalar rvm en Ubuntu 14.04.

Luego ejecuto lo que sugiere:
gpg --keyserver hkp://keys.gnupg.net --recv-keys 409B6B1796C275462A1703113804BB82D39DC0E3
y luego volver a ejecutar
\curl -L https://get.rvm.io | bash -s stable --ruby
Ahora parece funcionar.
¿Qué significa el problema y qué sucede cuando ejecuto el
gpgcomando que resuelve el problema?¿Por qué está \ delante de
curl?
