¿Por qué mariadb no permite que el usuario normal de ubuntu ingrese a mysql como usuario root de mysql?

De acuerdo aesta respuestade SO, podría deberse a que su usuario root está usando el auth_socketcomplemento utilizado de forma predeterminada en MySQL/MariaDB en Ubuntu.

$ sudo mysql -u root

MariaDB [mysql]> USE mysql;
MariaDB [mysql]> SELECT User, Host, plugin FROM mysql.user;

+------------------+-----------------------+
| User             | plugin                |
+------------------+-----------------------+
| root             | auth_socket           |
+------------------+-----------------------+

Cambiar esto a mysql_native_passwordle permitirá conectarse sin necesidad de sudo:

$ sudo mysql -u root

MariaDB [mysql]> USE mysql;
MariaDB [mysql]> UPDATE user SET plugin='mysql_native_password' WHERE User='root';
MariaDB [mysql]> FLUSH PRIVILEGES;
MariaDB [mysql]> exit;

$ service mysql restart
