Cometí un error. Tuve que actualizar mariadb de 10.0 a 10.2. También lo hice:
$ sudo apt-get install mariadb-server

Parece que hay versiones más nuevas disponibles para los paquetes que desea instalar que dependen de versiones igualmente más nuevas de los paquetes que ya están instalados. Apt no sabe cómo solucionar este problema a menos que le indique que actualice todos estos paquetes:
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade -f

Has probado
sudo service mysql stop
Antes de hacer:
sudo apt-get --purge remove "mysql*"
Lo probé en mi computadora portátil y funcionó.
Tenga en cuenta que cualquier configuración personalizada que se haya agregado después de la instalación seguirá ahí.
