Sistema de bloqueo MATLAB (gentoo linux)

Primero, permítanme comenzar diciendo que soy bastante nuevo en MATLAB y Linux, tal vez me estoy perdiendo algo obvio, si ese es el caso, tengan paciencia conmigo.

Me pidieron ayuda con un proyecto de modelado en mi departamento de matemáticas, así que descargué todo el código, instalé matlab en mi computadora y, después de pasar por algunos obstáculos (tuve que instalar una biblioteca llamada "glu"), el script en sí mismo realmente funciona. Llega un punto en el que creo que está intentando representar una trama en la que el sistema falla, no puedo acceder a otros ttys con ctrl-alt-F(cualquier cosa) y después de un momento aparece un cursor parpadeante en la parte superior derecha. Todavía no puedo hacer nada, Ctrl-Alt-Delete, nada. Entonces mantengo presionado el botón de encendido y apago la computadora.

En este punto, estoy bastante seguro de que es un problema de gráficos; también probé el renderizado con software opengl. El director del proyecto sugirió que podría haber un problema con el kernel ya que está destruyendo todo mi sistema, en este punto quiere que cambie a un entorno diferente para que podamos seguir adelante, aunque todavía me gustaría saberlo. ¿Qué está pasando con Gentoo aquí?

Una cosa en la que estaba pensando es que no tengo un DE, solo un WM en mosaico (excelente 3.5), no sé si esto causaría algún problema, solo una idea.
