Estoy intentando copiar todos los archivos PDF dentro de una lista de directorios a mi directorio temporal. Tengo este comando para obtener una lista de directorios aplicables:
dirname $(grep -r <my search criteria> /c01/app/*sup) | sort -u
Esto busca en todos .suplos archivos mis criterios de búsqueda. En esos directorios hay archivos PDF que quiero copiar.
EDITAR: al ejecutar un comando actualizado:
dirname $(grep -r <my search criteria> /c01/app/09/*/*/*/*/*/system/output/*sup)) | sort -u | xargs -I {} cp -- {}/*pdf .
Recibo este error:

Puedes usar un bucle de shell:
dirname $(grep -r <my search criteria> /c01/app/*sup) |
sort -u |
while IFS= read -r dir; do
cp -- "$dir"/*pdf /path/to/target/dir
done
También puedes hacerlo con xargs, pero como xargsno llama a un shell y en su lugar invoca cualquier utilidad que le indiques directamente, no se expandirá *pdfa la lista de archivos. Esto significa que necesitarías llamarlo explícitamente con un shell:
dirname $(grep -r <my search criteria> /c01/app/*sup) |
sort -u |
xargs -I {} sh -c "cp -- {}/*pdf /path/to/target/dir"
