Numeración de figuras por sección: restablecer el contador en cada sección

Me gustaría lograr una numeración de figuras similar a un libro para mi documento de clase de artículo. MWE:

\documentclass[11pt,a4paper]{article}
\usepackage{graphicx}

% optionally - this creates: Figure 1.1 ... Figure 2.2
%\renewcommand{\thefigure}{\arabic{section}.\arabic{figure}}

\section{first section}

No quiero restablecer el contador manualmente en cada sección.

Esto se logra fácilmente usando \numberwithindesde elpaquete amsmath.
