¿Cómo imprimir el resumen de paquetes que se pueden actualizar?

Cuando inicio sesión en Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS, aparece un mensaje similar a este:

6 packages can be updated.
6 updates are security updates.

¿Cómo puedo obtener un resumen detallado de las actualizaciones anteriores?

no quieroa ciegasInstale estas actualizaciones con sudo apt-get dist-upgrade.

Me gustaría saber qué estoy instalando antes de instalarlo, o incluso elegir qué actualizaciones quiero aplicar.

Si está utilizando apt-get/ aptitudepuede utilizar -Vpara mostrar un estado detallado de los paquetes que se actualizarán, si agrega más V, el informe será más detallado:

sudo apt-get -VV upgrade
