Pero no tengo idea de cómo puedo crear algo como esto:

Básicamente, robé la respuesta de JouleV y la revisé para usar el posicionamiento relativo y empaquetar los nodos más juntos. Específicamente, el espacio entre el texto de dos nodos adyacentes es 2 veces inner sep. Desafortunadamente, inner septambién se agrega a las líneas debajo del texto, por lo que tuve que reducir inner xsepy aumentar la separación usando [right=4pt].

Por cierto, el valor predeterminado inner sepes 0,333em.
