Intenté montar espacio de intercambio adicional ya que el servidor solo tiene 512 MB de RAM (la mitad compartida, la mitad "mía").
He instalado el software del que dependía la guía de instalación del pasajero.
Cuando ejecuto passenger-install-apache2-moduley rvmsudo passenger-install-nginx-moduleme pongo todo verde durante las comprobaciones y luego lo último que sucede antes, siempre se detiene durante mucho tiempo y luego me expulsa de la sesión ssh:

Estoy tirando del pelo pero no ayuda mucho. No parece haber ningún rastro de este problema al usar mi google-fu, así que supongo que hice FUBAR en el servidor en un momento anterior. Pero en realidad sólo he intentado instalar rieles, así que no hay muchas otras cosas sobre ellos.
Tengo Ruby en RVM, si eso importa.

Actualicé el servidor de 512 MB de RAM a 1024 MB y todo funcionó.

Deberías agregar un área de intercambio como en este tutorial.https://www.digitalocean.com/community/tutorials/how-to-add-swap-on-ubuntu-12-04
Pero deberías usar 1024 en lugar de 256K.
