Finalmente encontré algo de información sobreesta lista de correo.
La configuración predeterminada de Redis tiene 16 bases de datos como máximo. Detener openvassd mientras está en progreso deja la base de datos bloqueada y al iniciarla la próxima vez se crea una nueva base de datos. Después de 16 cierres sucios de este tipo, openvassd se bloqueará al iniciarse debido a la falta de bases de datos de Redis.
Una forma de fuerza bruta de solucionar este problema es la flushall
directiva redis (sustituya su archivo redis sock según corresponda):
# redis-cli -s /tmp/redis.sock
> flushall
Incluso pude reanudar mi escaneo masivo...
