Tengo Unity y Gnome instalados en mi computadora (Ubuntu 16.04.4). ¿Cómo puedo eliminar Unity sin causar ningún daño? Cuando busco en Synaptic Manager (unidad de búsqueda), el resultado son 500 filas y no puedo entender qué paquetes eliminar...

Pruebe esto: comience en modo de solo texto
Switch on your computer. Wait until the BIOS has finished loading, and press and hold Shift, which will bring up the Grub menu.
Select the line which starts with Advanced options.
Select the line ending with (recovery mode)
Press Return and your machine will begin the boot process.
After a few moments, your PC should display a menu with a number of options, including Drop to root shell prompt. Press Return with this option highlighted.
The PC will start in a terminal.
Ejecute estos comandos:
Montar particiones en modo lectura-escritura
mount -o remount,rw /
mount --all
Actualizar repositorios
apt update
Instalar aptitude y deborphan
apt install --reinstall aptitude deborphan
Eliminar los componentes de unity que no son necesarios en gnome
aptitude remove '?and(?reverse-depends(unity),?not(?reverse-depends(?exact-name(gnome))))'
Reinstalar gnomo
apt install --reinstall gnome
Eliminar paquetes huérfanos
deborphan
apt --purge remove $(deborphan)
deborphan --libdevel
apt --purge remove $(deborphan --libdevel)
deborphan --find-config
dpkg --purge $(deborphan --find-config)
Eliminar paquetes innecesarios
apt autoremove
Eliminar paquetes descargados
apt clean
Reiniciar el sistema
reboot
