Ya intenté purgar y reinstalar el servidor mysql, pero no funcionó. También investigué si la gente ya había hecho esta pregunta o si hay algo en la documentación de MySQL, pero no tuve éxito. También intenté desactivar el firewall (ufw), pero tampoco funcionó.
Realmente aprecio cualquier ayuda.

Verifique los modos sql en my.cnf. Mi configuración incluía un modo SQL que ya no era válido (NO_AUTO_CREATE_USER) y provocó que la actualización de Ubuntu 20.04 fallara sin terminar...
vi /etc/mysql/my.cnf
hizo el siguiente cambio
[mysqld]

guarde y vuelva a intentar instalar...
Explicar exactamente por qué este modo sql no es válido en 20.04 es algo para Google... HTH

Esto podría estar sucediendo si instaló Mysql anteriormente y no se ha eliminado por completo de su sistema. O existe la posibilidad de que su proceso no encuentre el archivo requerido para ejecutar mysql. intenta eliminar mysql por completo
sudo killall mysqld
sudo apt-get remove mysql
sudo rm -rf /etc/mysql
sudo reboot
luego intenta instalar mysql nuevamente
