Configuración de doble monitor en Linux Mint 17.2 Rafaela

Bien, he estado analizando este problema con martillo y tenaza durante 6 días (y más de dos semanas en un intento anterior).

Mi problema es configurar Linux Mint con un monitor externo conectado a mi computadora portátil.

Posiblemente probé todas las sugerencias que pude encontrar en línea sin éxito. ¡Y ahora estoy listo para romper mi computadora portátil por intentarlo y fallar!

Lo que ya he probado

Edité /etc/X11/xorg.conf muchas veces y, a veces, X no se iniciaba, así que tuve que deshacer mis cambios desde la terminal tty y reiniciar. Aquí está mi xorg.conf actual:

Y encontré muchas más sugerencias; de hecho, probé muchas cosas que no podría enumerar aquí incluso si pudiera recordarlas.

Mate Monitor Preferences no reconoce el monitor externo (obviamente).

Arandr actúa como si solo tuviera el monitor "predeterminado".

Mi sistema se muestra en ambas pantallas peronopor separado, ya que es igual en ambos monitores, por lo que el monitor funciona y el adaptador VGA funciona y la tarjeta gráfica puede enviar salida a ambos, pero no como una configuración adecuada de monitor dual.

¿Si alguien sabe para qué sirve exactamente ~/.config/monitors.xml?
