He leído varias preguntas relacionadas con ExFAT y para 12.04 recomiendan:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:relan/exfat
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install fuse-exfat exfat-utils
Sin embargo, tengo problemas en el primer paso con:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:relan/exfat

Supongo que add-apt-repository y apt-add-repository son equivalentes, ciertamente dan como resultado el mismo mensaje de error.
Cuando luego hago:
sudo apt-get update
... SNIP ...

Mientras:
apt-cache search exfat

Abandoné el PPA porque los paquetes ahora están disponibles en el repositorio del universo, gracias a Debian.
Deberías habilitar los backports: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports
Y luego instale el paquete exfat-fuse: http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise-backports/exfat-fuse
