Encomendamos uma máquina pré-construída com as especificações abaixo e instalamos o Ubuntu 17.04 no SSD. O Ubuntu congelou aleatoriamente em quatro pontos diferentes (inclusive durante a instalação do anaconda para Python). Decidimos mudar para 16.04 (já que estávamos mais familiarizados com este sistema operacional em nossos trabalhos diários) na mesma unidade SSD, e o problema persistiu.
Esta é a saída dos syslogs correlacionada com o tempo de um dos congelamentos.

Acontece que tive que reinstalar o Linux e habilitar a versão 340 do driver nvidia em vez da versão testada mais recente e até agora não houve congelamento por 24 horas. Sair do modo de espera também funciona. Esperamos que isso continue. –@sousuffer
