sudo rm /etc/kernel/postrm.d/x-grub-legacy-ec2também
sudo rm /boot/grub/default
Então tente sudo dpkg --configure -aNão, erro?
sudo apt install --reinstall grub-common grub-gfxpayload-lists grub-pc grub-pc-bin grub2-common
Depois disso, instalamos o código de boot no MBR. sudo dpkg-reconfigure grub-pc
Se você tiver apenas um disco rígido, /dev/sda é o lugar certo.

Os erros que você está encontrando são bastante autoexplicativos:
dpkg-query: error: package 'grub-legacy-ec2' is not installed
Eu acho que você realmente precisa instalar esse pacote. Tente fazer isso e tente novamente? sudo apt install grub-legacy-ec2

No meu caso, tive uma ligeira variação em relação ao acima:
Eu apaguei /etc/kernel/postinst.d/x-grub-legacy-ec2 além de postrm.d
O kernel 4.15 parece vir do pacote linux-image-virtual. Eu o removi, mas o erro persistiu. Então editei /boot/grub/menu.lst e removi todas as entradas que indicavam a versão 4.15 do kernel (que apontavam para arquivos inexistentes).
