Eu estava tentando editar source.list apt-get install updatee gerei um novo código-fonte repogen.simplylinux.che não sei o que aconteceu durante a edição, mas agora, quando digito, versionele diz:

e quando eu faço apt-get install mtoolsisso ele diz:

Parece que seu arquivo sources.list está faltando, com base na descrição do seu tópico. Verifique se o arquivo realmente está faltando ...
file /etc/apt/sources.list
Se estiver faltando, anexei uma cópia do arquivo sources.list original no final desta resposta. (A propósito, notei que você está logado como root. Provavelmente é melhor fazer login como usuário administrador e elevar seus privilégios conforme/quando necessário).
Em um tipo de terminal
gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
Recorte e cole o conteúdo da lista de fontes mostrada no final desta resposta. Feche o gedit e digite o seguinte em seu terminal
sudo apt-get update
Em relação a outros repositórios que você possa ter adicionado, abra uma nova pergunta conforme sugerido.
