Instalei o Telegram seguindo estas instruções:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:atareao/telegram
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install telegram
To run, simply open Dash and type Telegram. You will see an option called "Telegram Desktop". If you encounter any issue like Telegram not opening the Desktop version, but instead the Web version, run the following:
/opt/telegram/Telegram
This should make the Telegram Desktop version appear on the Ubuntu Dash.

Mas o Telegram ainda não aparece no Ubuntu Dash. Qualquer ideia?

Também instalei o Telegram, mas usando o arquivo tar do site do Telegram.
Tive que procurar o aplicativo Telegram depois de movê-lo para a pasta /opt e, em seguida, arrastei e soltei-o no inicializador da barra lateral do Unity

Eu tenho esse problema. Você deve criar o arquivo "telegram.desktop" em:
/usr/share/applications/
Em seguida, cole o seguinte conteúdo nele:

Type=Application
Terminal=false
Name=Telegram
Exec=/opt/telegram/Telegram
Comment=Network taking back our right to privacy.

Após salvar o arquivo, o Telegram aparecerá!
