Quero atribuir IP adicional ao meu servidor Ubuntu 14.02. Minha configuração é como:

auto eth0
auto eth0:0

iface eth0 inet static
    address xxx.xx.xx.xx
    netmask xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
    network xxx.xx.xx.x
    broadcast xxx.xx.xx.xxx
    gateway xxx.xx.xx.x

iface eth0:0 inet static
    address xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
    netmask xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx
    gateway xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx

Quando eu fizer isso, ifconfig. o eth0:0 não é visível no resultado.

Isso parece correto. Você tentou reiniciar ou executar ifup eth0:0 para abrir a Interface?

Além disso, definir um gateway me parece suspeito - você provavelmente não deseja ter 1 gateway em sua configuração - se você estiver tentando fazer multihome, é um pouco mais complexo do que apenas adicionar 2 interfaces - você precisará use roteamento baseado em política (fonte).
