Estou tentando instalar o cliente PHP Sphinx (PHP 5.6) em meu servidor Debian 7 usando PECL. Recebo o erro enganoso "versão errada do libsphinxclient ou lib não encontrada" ao tentar compilar, embora já tenha instalado o Sphinx e possa ver a biblioteca em/usr/lib.

O Sphinx está faltando uma dependência necessária e o script de configuração está interpretando mal o motivo da falha. Instalar a versão correta do glibc corrigiu o problema.
Estou postando isso porque não houve resultados relevantes do Google para a mensagem de erro que estava recebendo.
Usei o seguinte procedimento para identificar o problema:

Eu tenho o mesmo problema e isso funciona para mim no Ubuntu 14.04 confiável
Primeiro você precisa instalar o sphinxsearch
sudo apt-get install sphinxsearch sphinxbase-utils libsphinxbase-dev
Então vá para a pasta api libsphinxclient e instale
cd /usr/share/sphinxsearch/api/libsphinxclient
sudo ./configure
sudo make
sudo make install
Então você pode instalar o cliente sphinx usando pecl
sudo pecl install sphinx
Lembre-se, após a instalação, você precisa adicionar extension=sphinx.so ao arquivo php.ini e reiniciar o servidor Apache
