Eu tenho esse comportamento estranho:
É como se eu tivesse introduzido lhang=1um argumento opcional, mas não fiz tal coisa. O que poderia estar causando isso?

Lettrine funciona em parágrafos: altera a forma. Falta um \parno final do seu ambiente, então os grupos terminam antes do parágrafo e as configurações do lettrine são perdidas para todo o parágrafo. Adicione um \parà sua definição de \endprayer.
