Como imprimir o resumo dos pacotes que podem ser atualizados?

Quando faço login no Ubuntu Server 12.04 LTS, recebo uma mensagem parecida com esta:

6 packages can be updated.
6 updates are security updates.

Como posso obter um resumo detalhado das atualizações acima?

eu não querocegamenteinstale essas atualizações com sudo apt-get dist-upgrade.

Gostaria de saber o que estou instalando antes de instalá-lo ou até mesmo escolher quais atualizações desejo aplicar.

Se você estiver usando apt-get/ aptitudevocê pode usar -Vpara mostrar um status detalhado dos pacotes a serem atualizados, se você adicionar mais Vo relatório será mais detalhado:

sudo apt-get -VV upgrade
