Estamos recebendo muitos erros de conexão em condições normais, então presumo que seja um problema de configuração. Quatro servidores web,nãousando conexões persistentes, em parte porque isso desencadeia o erro de muitas conexões muito rapidamente. A máquina está hospedada na Amazon. Alguns servidores web não estão na mesma AZ que o banco de dados. 1a->1d.
Estranhamente, o valor codificado max_connectionsé 400, mas define-o como 214 na reinicialização. Consigo mudar esse valor global do cliente mysql de volta para 400. Mas ir além parece excessivo.

O aplicativo é PHP (fcgi/apache).
O tamanho do nosso banco de dados é de cerca de 54G. A máquina possui 36Gigs de RAM. Grátis me diz que há 13G grátis, incluindo até mesmo toda a memória RAM usada para cache/buffers. Quando tentei fornecer 32G para "innodb_buffer_pool_size", o MySQL falhou ao iniciar devido ao mmap ficar sem memória alocável. O buffer pool está atualmente em 22G.
A saída do mysqltuner mencionou o tamanho do bufferpool e join_buffer_size - que não está na configuração abaixo.

Depurando problema de muitas conexões do MySQL
max_used_connectionsé 21 na saída de SHOW STATUS.
max_user_connectionsestá definido como 0 ... sem limite.
Editar: isso pode estar relacionado ao limite de arquivos/páginas abertas em sistemas Linux?

Temos um banco de dados separado que usamos para sessões que foi configurado para usar conexões persistentes do PHP, e é daí que vem a mensagem de erro.
Desativando conexões persistentespode acabar sendo a resposta, afinal. O motivo acima vem de não ser possível encontrar nada incomumente ruim na configuração do banco de dados principal.
