Começo no sistema de arquivos raiz e uso o du
comando. Isso me diz que é uma espécie de 'melhor falador'. Em seguida, entro nesse diretório e faço isso novamente até fazer uma busca detalhada. Você também pode remover a --max-depth=1
peça e ela dividirá cada subdiretório de uma só vez. Acho esse resultado um pouco impressionante, mas isso é coisa de estilo.
No exemplo a seguir, o diretório /etc é o mais gordo. (Encurtei um pouco a saída.)

Tudo o que resta é ir ls
aos diretórios gordos e descobrir o que há neles.

find / -mount -type f -ls
listará todos os arquivos com uma saída semelhante a ls -dils
.
find / -mount -type f -printf "%s %h/%f\n"
irá apenas imprimir o tamanho e o nome.
A opção -mount
(ou -xdev
) diz ao find para não descer para outros sistemas de arquivos montados (que /
geralmente possuem pelo menos alguns deles) e type -f
garante que apenas arquivos e não diretórios ou links sejam listados.
