Eu fiz o seguinte, mas tudo que recebo no VNC Viewer é uma tela laranja em branco, qualquer ajuda será apreciada.

  1. apt-get -y install ubuntu-desktop tightvncserver

  2. adduser vnc && passwd vnc

  3. echo "vnc ALL=(ALL) ALL" >> /etc/sudoers

  4. sudo -u vnc vncpasswd

  5. nano ~/.vnc/xstartupe digite o seguinte:

    #!/bin/sh
# Uncomment the following two lines for normal desktop:
unset SESSION_MANAGER
. /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc

[ -x /etc/vnc/xstartup ] && exec /etc/vnc/xstartup
[ -r $HOME/.Xresources ] && xrdb $HOME/.Xresources
xsetroot -solid grey
vncconfig -iconic &
x-terminal-emulator -geometry 1280x1024+10+10 -ls -title "$VNCDESKTOP Desktop" &
#x-window-manager &

    salvar

  6. sudo nano /etc/init.d/vncserver, cole o seguinte e salve:

    Em seguida, pressione Ctrl-x para salvar, Y para Sim e digite para aceitar o nome do arquivo.

  7. chown -R vnc. /home/vnc/.vnc && chmod +x /home/vnc/.vnc/xstartup

  8. sed -i 's/allowed_users.*/allowed_users=anybody/g' /etc/X11/Xwrapper.config

  9. chmod +x /etc/init.d/vncserver && service vncserver start

  10. update-rc.d vncserver defaults

  11. reinício.

  12. finalmente,entre lá com o cliente visualizador tightvnc e voila, tela em branco kool aid laranja tangerina.

você não configurou a sessão gui para o arquivo xstartup, é por isso que você vê uma tela em branco ao tentar se conectar remotamente ao seu desktop/servidor via vnc no ubuntu, se você quiser o gnome, instale esses pacotes

# apt-get install gnome-panel gnome-settings-daemon metacity nautilus gnome-terminal

e use este arquivo xstartup

unset SESSION_MANAGER
unset DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS

[ -x /etc/vnc/xstartup ] && exec /etc/vnc/xstartup

vncconfig -iconic &

gnome-panel &
gnome-settings-daemon &
metacity &
nautilus &
gnome-terminal &

Pelo que tenho visto, você não pode entrar na unidade. Instale um ambiente de área de trabalho diferente e você estará bem. Veja como funciona o xfce:
