Meu laptop veio pré-instalado com o Windows 8.1.
Eu configurei a inicialização dupla. Tudo parecia bem e acessei o Ubuntu sem problemas depois de selecioná-lo no menu para selecionar o sistema operacional. Devo acrescentar que o método de inicialização foi alterado para legado.
No entanto, desde que uso o Ubuntu, não consigo mais selecionar o sistema operacional. O laptop simplesmente inicializa diretamente no Ubuntu.
Portanto, tentei acessar as opções de recuperação, mas parece que o gerenciador de inicialização do Windows 8 foi corrompido de alguma forma, pois agora me disseram para usar o disco de recuperação do Windows 8 (que, como estava pré-instalado - eu não tenho).
Tentei o reparo de inicialização novamente sem sucesso. Na reinicialização, recebo apenas uma tela inicial básica solicitando que eu selecione Ubuntu, Memtest, Windows 8 Recovery ou Windows 8 Bootloader (os bootloaders novamente exigem que eu insira o disco).

Não fiz nada manualmente - o instalador fez tudo (com exceção de alterar o boot para Legacy para permitir a inicialização de outro bootloader).

Acho que o que aconteceu de alguma forma corrompeu os arquivos e mesmo que o Live CD e o USB funcionassem em outros computadores, este laptop se recusou a reconhecer que o disco e o USB foram inseridos, o que resultou em eu me deparar com o infernal Grub Recover.
Felizmente eu estava usando um Sony Vaio que possui um botão ASSIST incrível. Para usar isso, desligue o laptop completamente e, em vez de pressionar o botão liga / desliga, basta pressionar o botão ASSIST. Isso força a abertura do Sony Recovery Console.
A partir daqui é possível recuperar o SO, verificar e reparar o HDD e também acessar o BIOS.... foi o que fiz.
Em uma visita anterior ao BIOS, alterei as opções de inicialização para LEGACY para instalar outro sistema operacional com Windows 8. Portanto, mudei de Legacy de volta para UEFI e verifiquei novamente a ordem de inicialização. Salvei, reiniciei e agora tenho a opção de selecionar o sistema operacional.

Meu sistema Windows não inicializa no modo legado - acredito que você precisará reativar o UEFI para executar o Windows 8. Se possível, às vezes há uma opção UEFI/sem inicialização segura que funciona melhor para mim.
Em vez de trabalhar diretamente com o GRUB, eu uso grub-customizero which que lida com quase tudo que eu precisei fazer e, como faz isso em uma interface gráfica fácil e agradável, é minha opção preferida. Uma coisa que ele faz é verificar o HDD em busca de sistemas operacionais alternativos para colocar nos menus de inicialização.
