Tenho um pequeno problema ao iniciar minha máquina no Ubuntu. Tudo corre bem, a tela de login aparece na resolução correta. Em seguida, ele muda para uma resolução incorreta. Depois de fazer login, a resolução se resolve corretamente novamente.
Eu segui vários tópicos que tratam de problemas de driver da nvidia (originalmente comecei com tela preta depois de adquirir uma nova placa gráfica). Com esta última edição, examinei o Xorg.0.log e identifiquei dois pontos que refletem as mudanças na resolução.

Não tenho certeza de onde está a configuração que aciona a seleção automática da nvidia, ou mesmo se isso pode ser ajustado. Alguém pode me apontar na direção certa?

Você tem um xorg.conf? Talvez haja algumas configurações incorretas que possam fazer com que ele tente definir uma resolução que na verdade não suporta.

Acabei de me deparar com esse problema também. Algumas configurações do ambiente de desktop substituirão as configurações do xorg.conf e aparecerão como "nvidia-auto-select" no log. No meu caso, o KDE tinha a resolução definida em ~/.local/share/kscreen/*
Você pode confirmar se está armazenado em uma configuração local criando e fazendo login com um novo usuário. Depois disso, basta definir a resolução da tela para alguma largura/altura obscura e usar o grep para esses números em ~/ para descobrir onde a configuração está escondida
