ok, então eu tenho uma nova impressora HP, foi isso que aconteceu (até agora)
O HPLIP 3.17.7 foi pré-instalado, tentei instalar o 3.17.11, mas havia problemas de dependência, então deixei como estava, pois não era realmente necessário. descompactei, conectei ao wifi e instalei via caixa de ferramentas HPLIP (primeiro via USB e depois foi adicionado via WiFi)
tudo funcionou bem (então), exceto:
Havia 2 impressoras (com nomes ligeiramente diferentes) e um fax instalado nos dispositivos, enquanto apenas 1 impressora e 1 fax na caixa de ferramentas HPLIP.
Tentei removê-los e reinstalá-los (as duas impressoras simplesmente não pareciam certas). mas esta manhã descobri que restava apenas uma impressora, as duas da caixa de ferramentas hplip haviam desaparecido.
Também descobri que a impressora não foi ativada quando um trabalho foi enviado, mas foi impressa quando ativei a impressora manualmente.
Tentei reinstalar a impressora via caixa de ferramentas hplip, mas esqueci de retirar o usb para que tudo funcionasse, mas via usb e não wifi. Nesse ínterim, também tentei digitalizar .. que funcionou (principalmente), mas também via USB, é claro.
Agora tirei o USB e descobri que há apenas uma impressora em dispositivos, mas não consigo ter o hplip para encontrar as impressoras (enquanto a configuração funciona normalmente) e o scanner não foi encontrado em xsane.
de qualquer forma, eu adoraria começar um novo.
para isso acredito que devo: reiniciar a impressora.
remova todas as "instâncias" da impressora no Ubuntu.
eu gostaria de instalar o hplip 3.17.11
mas tenho problemas com os dois últimos:
pois a última impressora restante volta se eu removê-la mesmo com a impressora desligada. experimentei em dispositivos e em copos!
sobre a versão hplip, estou em dúvida, a hp me disse que há suporte para 17.10 de 64 bits adicionado, mas por que o ubuntu 17.10 vem com 3.17.7. também a impressora em si realmente não precisa disso.

Bem, por enquanto, parece que resolvi esse problema:
1) redefinir a impressora para as configurações de fábrica 2) atualizar o Ubuntu para a versão mais recente (ainda 17.10), mas uma nova instalação
