Querida comunidade deste maravilhoso SO, há 3 dias tento reanimar minha máquina virtual na qual faço todo o meu trabalho, mas não tenho sucesso. Preciso desesperadamente de ajuda nisso.
Aqui está o que aconteceu: instalei atualizações por meio do GUI de atualização do desktop depois que ele relatou que havia novas atualizações e reiniciei minha máquina virtual. No entanto, ele fica completamente preso na tela de login desde então. Posso ver a tela de login com o texto "ubuntu" na parte inferior, porém não há controles de login (como seleção de usuário ou campo de entrada de senha). Está completamente congelado porque tentar pressionar Ctrl-Shift e qualquer uma das teclas F não me leva ao terminal. O interessante, porém, é que se eu enviar o comando shutdown através da minha estação de trabalho VMware (versão 15.1.0 build-13591040), posso ver um desligamento regular com a interrupção de todos os serviços, o que me parece estranho. Inicializar no kernel anterior através do menu de inicialização leva ao mesmo resultado.
Pesquisei no Google por problemas semelhantes e tentei muitas coisas que foram recomendadas. Por exemplo, lancei também a partir de um live-cd, montei meu sistema de arquivos e verifiquei se havia pacotes quebrados. Isso não ajudou. Também reinstalei à força vários pacotes via apt e snap. Principalmente pacotes onde foram relatados erros no arquivo de log. Sem sucesso. O mais promissor parecia instantâneo porque indicava na lista instantânea que todos os pacotes estavam quebrados. Atualizei todos eles (na linha de comando da inicialização segura), mas o resultado ainda foi o mesmo.
Também reinstalei o pacote gvfs, pois ele é relatado em associação com todas essas mensagens de erro G_UDEV_IS_DEVICE.
O arquivo de log contém vários erros, mas alguns podem estar lá antes mesmo do problema aparecer. Portanto, não tenho certeza de qual mensagem de erro está relacionada a esse problema.

Finalmente consegui voltar a funcionar!!! Para quem está com o mesmo problema, encontrei a solução aqui: Erro 1832138
Minha solução foi inicializar no shell seguro (pressionando ESC durante a inicialização) e a partir do terminal instalei um kernel mais recente:
apt install linux-generic-hwe-18.04
