Configuração de monitor duplo no Linux Mint 17.2 Rafaela

OK, então estou enfrentando esse problema há 6 dias (e mais de duas semanas em uma tentativa anterior).

Meu problema é configurar o Linux Mint com um monitor externo conectado ao meu laptop.

Tentei possivelmente todas as sugestões que encontrei on-line, sem sucesso. E agora estou pronto para quebrar meu laptop por tentar e falhar!

Meu sistema e hardware

O que eu já tentei

Editando /etc/X11/xorg.conf muitas vezes e às vezes o X não iniciava, então tive que desfazer minhas alterações do terminal tty e reiniciar. Aqui está meu xorg.conf atual:

E muitas outras sugestões que encontrei, na verdade já tentei tantas coisas que não conseguiria listá-las aqui mesmo que me lembrasse!

O Mate Monitor Preferences não reconhece monitor externo (obviamente).

Arandr age como se eu tivesse apenas o monitor 'padrão'.

Meu sistema está sendo exibido em ambas as telas, masnãoseparadamente, como é o mesmo em ambos os monitores, então o monitor funciona e o adaptador VGA funciona e a placa gráfica pode gerar saída para ambos, mas não como uma configuração adequada de monitor duplo.

Se alguém sabe para que serve exatamente ~/.config/monitors.xml?
