Eu li uma série de perguntas relacionadas ao ExFAT e para 12.04 elas recomendam:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:relan/exfat
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install fuse-exfat exfat-utils
No entanto, tenho problemas na primeira etapa com:
sudo apt-add-repository ppa:relan/exfat

Presumo que add-apt-repository e apt-add-repository sejam equivalentes, certamente resultam na mesma mensagem de erro.
Quando eu faço:
sudo apt-get update
... SNIP ...
Reading package lists... Done

Enquanto:
apt-cache search exfat
fuse-exfat - This driver is the first free exFAT file
exfat-utils - A set of utilities for creating, checking, dumping and labelling
Ainda:
sudo apt-get install fuse-exfat

Prefiro não instalar sem verificação :) Então, como resolvo isso?

Abandonei o PPA porque os pacotes agora estão disponíveis no repositório universo, graças ao Debian.
Você deve habilitar backports: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/UbuntuBackports
E então instale o pacote exfat-fuse: http://packages.ubuntu.com/precise-backports/exfat-fuse
