Похоже, что VBoxGuestAdditions 5.1.2 несовместим с Ubuntu 18.04. Я попробовал установить свой менеджер виртуальных ящиков до последней версии и загрузить последний VBoxGuestAdditions (16.0.4), и теперь он работает.
