No estoy del todo seguro de haberlo entendido correctamente, pero los nodos que contienen los años se denominan \timespan-\xi, donde \timespanes lo que usted define timespan={}(es decir, nada, en su caso), y \xies un contador que comienza desde 1. Por lo tanto, el nodo 1966, por ejemplo se llama -1, por lo que podrías poner tu hito en, por ejemplo -1.south. Hice los dos primeros como ejemplo, pero puedes completar el resto tú mismo. De todos modos, no sé cómo te gustaría colocar el texto:
Quizás notes que el círculo del hito no está exactamente centrado debajo del año. La razón de esto es un espacio explícito en el texto del nodo, como puede ver en las líneas98 y 102 pulgadastikzlibrarytimeline.code.tex. Agregar draw=whitea las opciones del nodo demuestra esto:
Sin embargo, puedes parchear la \timelinemacro para eliminar el espacio, con
