Вы не сообщили нам, какие версии вы modencvиспользуете fontawesome.

Наконец-то ubuntu (и debian) установили устаревшую версию TeX Live. Лучше использовать оригинальный TeX Live, который можно установить следующим образом этот вопрос.

Если вы хотите попробовать установку только fontawesomeв Ubuntu, используйте команду:

sudo apt-get install texlive-fonts-extra

Убедитесь, что FNDB обновлен и все карты шрифтов загружены (я не использую Ubuntu, я не знаю, как это делается в этой ОС).

После установки TeX Live new вы потеряли обновленный вручную moderncv. Поэтому лучше внести необходимые изменения moderncvв преамбулу вашего резюме.
