Для создания панели навигации по разделам я использую следующий код:

Теперь у панели навигации синий фон и белый шрифт для текущего раздела, а также серый шрифт для других разделов. Но возможно ли иметь разные цвета фона для них? Например, темно-синий фон для текущего раздела и светло-синий фон для других разделов?

Как легко заметить, разделы 1 и 2 в панели навигации, похоже, принадлежат к единой длинной горизонтальной полосе без какой-либо границы между ними. У них один и тот же цвет фона, только текущий выделен. Я хотел бы сделать для них разные цвета фона. Это возможно?

Вы можете переопределить section in head/foot (shaded)шаблоны, включив в них своего рода цветовую палитру:
